Occupancy Analytics FAQs
Q.Which types of occupancy sensors do Strive AV install?
We deploy four main sensor families across UK workplaces. PIR motion sensors are the cheapest and detect presence (not count), typically £40–£90 per sensor. Time-of-flight (ToF) sensors from Pointgrab, Irisys, Density and HALO accurately count people in real time without facial data — usually £150–£500 per sensor. Wi-Fi-based analytics use existing Cisco, Aruba or Meraki access points with no additional hardware. Camera-based sensors offer the highest accuracy but require careful GDPR review. We help you pick the right mix for each space.
Q.How does Strive AV ensure occupancy analytics are GDPR-compliant?
All workplace sensor data we collect is anonymous by design. ToF and PIR sensors do not capture images, faces or personal identifiers — they output people counts only. Wi-Fi analytics is configured with MAC randomisation and aggregation so individuals cannot be re-identified. We help you complete a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), publish appropriate workplace privacy notices, set retention periods (typically 13 months for trend analysis) and consult with works councils or unions where required.
Q.What's the difference between Wi-Fi, ToF and camera-based occupancy sensing?
Wi-Fi-based analytics is fastest to deploy because it uses existing infrastructure but it tends to over-count (multiple devices per person) and has lower accuracy in high-density spaces. ToF sensors offer 95–98% accuracy, are anonymous and best suited to meeting rooms, individual desks and zones. Camera-based sensors offer the highest accuracy and behavioural analytics but need stronger GDPR controls and cabling. Most UK clients run a hybrid: Wi-Fi for floor-level trends, ToF for rooms and desks, and cameras only where business cases justify them.
Q.Which occupancy analytics dashboards do you support?
We integrate with the leading workplace-analytics dashboards including Density, VergeSense, Pointgrab CogniPoint, Irisys SpaceView, Disruptive Technologies Studio, GoBright, Spaceti and the analytics modules inside Robin and Condeco. We can also push data into Power BI, Tableau and corporate FM dashboards via API or REST endpoints, so HR, FM and finance teams get the same view of how the estate is actually used.
Q.Can occupancy analytics integrate with HR, FM and BMS systems?
Yes. Sensor data is most valuable when it joins up with other systems. We commonly integrate with HR platforms (Workday, SAP SuccessFactors, BambooHR) for headcount context, with FM systems (Planon, Archibus, FMX) for cleaning and maintenance triggering, and with building management (Trend, Distech, Honeywell) so HVAC and lighting respond to actual occupancy. Integration is via REST APIs, MQTT, BACnet/IP or webhooks depending on the platform.
Q.What ROI can occupancy analytics deliver in the UK?
Most UK clients see payback in 6–18 months. Typical wins include 15–35% reduction in property cost through right-sizing the estate, 20–40% lower cleaning spend by switching to demand-based cleaning, 10–20% reduction in HVAC energy by tying setpoints to real occupancy, and stronger employee experience because rooms are correctly sized and configured. We can model an expected ROI based on your portfolio, current cost per workstation and hybrid working policies.
Q.How long does an occupancy analytics deployment take?
A pilot covering one floor or building typically takes 3–6 weeks from kick-off to live dashboards. Larger multi-site rollouts are normally phased over 3–9 months. Our scope includes sensor selection, network and PoE design, mounting, commissioning, dashboard configuration, DPIA support, employee privacy notices, integration with HR/FM/BMS as required, plus a managed support service to keep sensors and dashboards healthy long term.
