Digital signage

What is an outdoor digital signage display?

Last updated:

An outdoor digital signage display is a weatherproof, high-brightness commercial screen rated IP65 (dust-tight, water jet resistant) or IP66 (dust-tight, vandal-grade), with brightness of 2,500 to 5,000 nits so it stays readable in full sunlight. They're used at petrol forecourts, drive-thru menu boards, transport interchanges, outdoor wayfinding, building facades and public-realm advertising.

There are two main technology choices:

TechnologyTypical useSizesUK install cost
High-bright outdoor LCDPetrol forecourt menus, drive-thru boards, bus shelters, wayfinding32" to 86"£4,000 to £15,000 per screen
Direct-view LED (dvLED)Building facades, large advertising, stadium perimeter, large wayfinding2m+ in any module shape£1,500 to £4,000 per square metre

Outdoor LCD is what most UK retail and hospitality outdoor signage uses up to 86 inches. Samsung OHF/OHB, LG XS-series and Philips Q-Line outdoor models are the typical specifications. They run an IP66-rated enclosure, sun-readable 2,500+ nit panel, anti-reflective glass, internal heating for cold mornings and an active cooling system to stop the screen overheating in direct sun.

Direct-view LED takes over above 86 inches because LCD can't be made bigger than that economically and reliably. dvLED is modular: you build the screen out of 500mm by 500mm cabinets in any size or shape, with pixel pitch (the distance between LEDs in millimetres) chosen for viewing distance. P3 or P4 pitch for close-viewing wayfinding; P6 or P8 for facade-distance advertising; P10+ for stadium perimeter where viewers are 30m+ away.

The hidden cost on an outdoor digital signage install is groundwork and structure. A freestanding totem needs a concrete base, ducted cabling and often a planning application; a building-mounted screen needs structural calculations and may need MEWP access for service. Budget £1,500 to £6,000 on top of the screen itself for civils and structure on most outdoor projects, and treat the planning timeline as 8 to 16 weeks rather than 2 to 3 weeks for indoor.

Service is also harder. An indoor screen is a 2-person ladder job; an outdoor screen is often a MEWP, traffic management and a 4-hour weather window. Specify a 4-year on-site warranty and a maintenance contract from day one rather than treating it like an indoor install.

Quick reference: weatherproof IP65/IP66 commercial display at 2,500-5,000 nits for daylight readability; high-bright outdoor LCD up to 86", direct-view LED above that.
